On February 17, 2023, the Key Laboratory of Tibetan Plateau Earth System, Environment and Resources (hereinafter referred to as "TPESER") held the third Masters' Frontier Lecture, at which, Academician Liu Congqiang, as the first guest speaker in 2023, delivered an academic report entitled "Interaction between Earth's Spheres in Tibetan Plateau and Global Change - Research on Processes of Earth's Critical Zone". Over 60 researchers and students from TPESER, including Academician Ding Lin, Director of TPESER, and Prof. Zhuang Xuliang, Secretary of the Party Committee, attended the lecture on the spot. Moreover, about 3,000 related researchers and the public attended the meeting online.
The lecture covered two parts: keynote lecture and academic exchanges. In his report, beginning with the relationship between Earth's sphere interaction in Tibetan Plateau and global change, Academician Liu introduced four core scientific challenges regarding the Tibetan Plateau, namely, the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and the movement of Earth's tectonic plates, the plateau uplift and global climate change, plateau tectonics – geomorphology – climate - ecosystem science, and surface system change and sustainable development of Tibetan Plateau in Anthropocene. After pointing out that the last three are all related to Earth's critical zone (CZ), Liu systematically explained the concepts, definitions, functions, values and significance of the CZ and CZ science. On this basis, he proposed significant suggestions for the research of the CZ science and its relationship with the earth system dynamics in Tibetan Plateau. During interactions and exchanges, Academician Liu had a heated discussion with participants online and on the spot on several issues, including "the bottom interface of Earth's critical zone", "the differences and connections among the CZ Science System, Surface Earth Science System and Earth System Science" and "rough division of Earth's critical zone in the Tibetan Plateau".
